Homework

All homework will be completed in a homework journal.

Homework journals are due each Friday.

Every Monday, a sheet will come home explaining what homework students should do in the journal for the week.

Students may choose to complete the tasks nightly, or you may adjust to fit your schedule.

While some tasks can be done independently, many activities are designed to be done with an adult!

Tips for Homework

GETTING READY

Create a homework plan with your child for how homework will be done and stick to it!

This sends the message that homework is important and helps create a homework routine.

  • Choose a spot.  Where will homework be done?   Think about noise and distractions.

  • Choose a time.  When will homework be done?  As soon as they get home?  After dinner?

  • Get the materials ready.  What will be needed to do homework?  A few sharpened pencils, a glue stick, crayons, and a pair of scissors?  If your child is missing any of these materials, please let us know.

DOING HOMEWORK

Keep it positive and be realistic.  Homework should not be an unhappy struggle!

  • Review homework directions with your child.  Make sure he/she understands what they are supposed to do.

  • Support and step back.  Help your child get started, then let him/her work.  Check on progress a few times, but also encourage some independent work.

  • Let mistakes happen.  Mistakes are part of learning.  Practicing at home is our goal, not perfection.  Encourage students to "try your best!" and not look to parents for constant support.

  • Set a timer.  Students should spend 15-20 minutes on daily homework and 20 minutes reading every night.  Setting a timer helps kids focus on a task by knowing an end is in sight.  If your child struggles with 20 minutes at home, start with 10 minutes and a break in between.
